When One Door Closes Another Will Open, if We Knock

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doors usually don't open for you unless you knock or unlock or open the door yourself. I mean, unless you’re at a business with an automatic door, but for the purpose of this article we’re going to talk about the traditional manual door structure.

Now we’ve all heard the saying, “When one door closes another will open”, but will it? I don’t know about you, but if I walk up to a door it doesn’t automatically open for me without me taking some sort of action (knocking, unlocking, etc.) What I’m saying is, it’s easy for us to wait on the next big thing to happen in our lives. It requires no effort to sit in anticipation of our next opportunity. However, expecting something extraordinary to happen in your life without taking action yourself is often going to lead you to disappointment. 

In Matthew the seventh chapter, one of the things the apostle Matthew writes from Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount mentions actions we must take to “knock”.

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: -Matthew 7:7

For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. -Matthew 7:7-8

The Bible clearly states that if we want something, WE need to ASK for it. 

If we want to find something, WE must SEEK it. 

If we want The door to open, WE must KNOCK. 

When was the last time you hit your knees to ask God for favor in your life or plead for his guidance for your next opportunity? I ask because I’ve been guilty of this myself. 

Wait, but why didn’t Jesus stop after saying, “ask and it shall be given you”? Have you ever noticed that a lot of times we only say that part? What Jesus says after that is very important. He isn’t saying that all we need to do is ask one time and we will receive whatever we want. So, if you’ve ever thought that was too good to be true, it is. That is not what Jesus meant, continue reading. God wants us to be persistent. God wants us to continually come to Him and bring our desires before the throne over and over and over again. After you ask, you seek. After you seek, you knock. After you knock, knock again!

Why is it that if we want a material item, we are not afraid to be persistent and go after it. If our child wants the latest and greatest toy for Christmas, we will go to five Walmarts, three Targets, shop online or even drive 50 plus miles to get it, but we do not do the same for ourselves spiritually. 

Whether you are waiting on your next opportunity or just want some answers from the Lord, ask. seek. knock. knock. knock. Wear holes in the knees of your pants while you ask God for guidance over and over again.

The same goes for your goals. If you want to start a business, try something new, or step out in faith, do it. And if your first attempt doesn't work, do it again, and again, and again.

When one door closes another will open, if we knock.
